After shattering all expectations and setting new attendance and prize pool records, the 2009 World Series of Poker Event #3 ($1500 Omaha Hi/Low Split 8 or Better) has finally crowned its new champion in an exciting final table that lasted for about six hours and that closed with Thang Luu taking the bracelet for a second year in a row. The event, which kicked off on Friday, May 29th and closed on Monday, June 1st at 12:24 am, registered a field of 918 and produced a prize pool of $1,253,070. A total of 19 players returned to the Amazon poker room yesterday afternoon to take part in the final round, including some big names such as the 2007 H.O.R.S.E. champion Freddy Deeb and 24 year old professional German player and WSOP and EPT Champ, Sebastian Ruthenberg, who finished in 8^th and 10^th place respectively.

Most of the attention was focused on Thang Luu, who won the same event in 2008 and finished second in 2007. The last time a player achieved a second place and two consecutive victories in the same event was two decades ago when Johnny Chan scored two consecutive $10,000 buy-in Main Event victories in 1988 and 1989 and a second place in 1990. Luu, who closed Day 1 leading the chip count, claimed several times that he was mentally prepared to win this tournament, and even when never had a considerable lead over the other players at the final table, he found the way to break down his opponents until the table was finally reduced to the last three survivors. The third-place finisher was Ming “Joy” Reslock, wife of the WSOP gold bracelet winner Chris Reslock. The runner up was Ed Smith, who has now finished second in three World Series of Poker events, including tournaments played in 1999 and 2000.

Besides its second WSOP bracelet, Luu got $263,135 for first place, the largest cash prize ever awarded in an Omaha High-Low tournament. Luu has now cashed five times at the WSOP and collected over $720K in career winnings.

“It feels even better than the last one. I think these kinds of $1,500 buy-in events are the best for me. There are a lot of new players in the lower buy-in tournaments.I know one thing for sure. I will play in this event every year from now on!” said Luu after winning the event.

Famous entertainer and producer Jeff Beacher, the mad man behind the outrageous and controversial “Beacher’s Madhouse” show presented at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, has recently announced that “Madhouse” will soon return to Las Vegas Strip for a series of shocking and unrealistic events packed with circus acts, “mini” impersonators, sexy dancers, weird contests and novelty acts.

No Doubt Summer Tour reunion to make stop in Las Vegas on August 7th
Officials of the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino have recently confirmed that No Doubt will return to Las Vegas on August 7th to play a one night show at the Joint with openers Panic at the Disco and The Sounds.

Even when the Grammy Award winning band formed by Gwen Stefani, Tony Kanal, Tom Dumont and Adrian Young previously announced that they were working on a Summer Tour after a nearly five-year hiatus, the official dates and venues were not confirmed at the time of the statement.

No Doubt’s North American Tour will be exclusively produced by Live Nation and is scheduled to kick off tomorrow in Tampa, Florida and closing on August 12^th in Hawaii. The tour will include stops in both the U.S. and Canada, including shows in Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. The last time the band toured the country was in 2004 when Stefani and Co. played a series of shows with Blink 182.

No Doubt debuted in 1992 with their eponymous album, but didn’t gain mainstream success until the band’s third album “Tragic Kingdom”, which launched the band to the top charts, selling more than 10 million records around the world and positioning several singles in the Billboard Top 10 list. No Doubt’s last recorded album “Rock Steady” was released in 2001, after which Stefani launched her solo career in 2004 with the album called “Love. Angel. Music. Baby”. In 2007 the band got together again for a short time to perform some of No Doubt’s hits during Stefani’s own tour. More recently, No Doubt recently joined forces with the famous golfer and philanthropist Tiger Woods to play at the annual Tiger Jam event held in Las Vegas on May 16^th, however, it was unclear if the California Ska Pop band had plans to include Las Vegas as part of its 2009 summer reunion tour.

2009 WSOP Event #4 sets record for largest field ever
Event #4 saw a massive field of 2,992 on Day 1a (May 30th) and 3,020 players on Day 1b (May 31st), bringing the total of players in Event #4 to 6,012, the largest field reported in any event besides the highly popular WSOP $10.000 Main Event.

The 2009 World Series of Poker Event #4 ($1,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em), billed by the organizers as a “stimulus special” tournament, has surpassed all expectations and set a new attendance record, blowing away the record for the largest field ever registered last year when a total of 3,929 players entered the $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em Event #2.  The Event #4 saw a massive field of 2,992 on Day 1a (May 30^th) and 3,020 players on Day 1b (May 31^st), bringing the total of players in Event #4 to 6,012, the largest field reported in any event besides the highly popular $10.000 Main Event.

“The demand for the Stimulus Special could be felt the moment we announced it. We welcome all the first-time players to the World Series of Poker and wish everyone good luck in their pursuit of a gold bracelet.” said World Series of Poker President and Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack.

Besides the massive amount of amateur players battling for a membership in the exclusive club of WSOP bracelet winners, a considerable number of pros turned out for this event, including John Juanda, Phil Hellmuth, Gavin Smith, John Phan, Chino Rheem, JC Tran, Lee Watkinson, Humberto Brenes, Marcel Luske, Daniel Negreanu, David Pham, Phil Ivey, Andy Black, Tiffany Michelle, T.J. Harrah’s Entertainment, owner of the World Series of Poker, has recently informed that Harrah’s Interactive, the new subsidiary created exclusively with the intention of promoting the WSOP tournament series around the globe, will begin its operations in the next weeks in Montreal, Canada.

About a week ago, Harrah’s Entertainment announced that Montreal native and former CEO of PartyPoker.com Mike Garber will serve the company as chief executive officer. According to Garber, the new company has two main goals, the first is “to offer online gaming in the U.K. and potentially elsewhere in Europe where it is legal and government-licensed.” The second goal is exploring the possibility of creating partnerships with governments of countries currently offering online poker and interested in inviting the World Series of Poker and Harrah’s to their poker operations.

Besides its position as CEO of Harrah’s Interactive, Garber will also take care of the World Series of Poker staff based in Las Vegas and England from the new Montreal office, which is expected to grow from its current staff of 10 to hundreds of workers in customer service and Web design in the next months.

“I’m really happy to bring Harrah’s to Montreal. There is a hunger for World Series of Poker events, like PGA golf, with events taking place everywhere, whether it is Moscow, Montreal, Rome. Our intent is to deal with government and licensing authorities in every jurisdiction to grow the World Series of Poker,” Garber said yesterday.

This week’s Sports Illustrated included an article from its “vault” on Tom Seaver’s 300th victory, for the White Sox at Yankee Stadium in August of 1985.

It mentioned 54,032 cheered the conclusion of the event, but even if that many tickets were sold, I promise you there were not that many people in the stadium at the end.

The strange thing was that the Yankees-fan regulars had pretty much cleared out of the lower deck by then, but the upper deck still mostly was full - of cheering Mets fans.

That day also was memorable for a Yankees great being run over by a cow.

But that’s another story.

After a day’s worth of flying — had a lengthy layover at Dallas/FTW (FTW!) — I landed at McCarran International Airport in Vegas at about 10 p.m. last evening. Garry from PokerNews met me at the baggage carousel, and when my overstuffed bag finally turned up it felt a little like I’d won at roulette. Felt like I’d won again once we made it to my digs for the summer, a sweet suite not far from the strip.

Gonna be meeting up with the Poker Grump for lunch today where I expect to offer him expert advice regarding his upcoming WSOP bracelet chase (on June 11). Will probably go ahead and get me a rental car today and take care of some of the setting-up-shop stuff here this afternoon. Even though public transportation is cheap and not too hard to negotiate, I think I want to have the car at least for the first part of the summer for the sake of convenience. Easier for grocery runs, meeting people in Henderson, etc.

Otherwise, today is somewhat free for me, agenda-wise. Probably will meet up with some PokerNews folks later in the afternoon for an informal reunion. Tomorrow is another, similar get-together, then on Wednesday we’ll be having several meetings of the photographers, the field reporters, and the live bloggers. Despite the last-minute nature of things, it looks like we’ll have a nice-sized crew here, with a lot of folks back from the last year (or two).

Actually didn’t sleep that well last night at all, though I’m not really fatigued this morning. (As my horoscope said yesterday, I project magnetism and energy, and the only thing that can stop me is fatigue.) Must be enjoying some of that travel-induced adrenaline that clearly helped fuel our friend B.J. Nemeth in his mad dash across the country with his dog, Rhapsody (followed by hundreds on Twitter). He made it an hour or two after I did.

Hit the hay around midnight, had three hours of dreamless bliss, then three more hours of tossin’ and turnin’ as thoughts of the many tasks that lay ahead came to me one after another. When I finally woke up for real about six this morning, I had a moment where I hadn’t quite realized I wasn’t home, but some two thousand-plus miles away.

In a strange-but-not-so-strange place. The home away from home.

How does it feel?

Feels like there’s lots of good reasons for getting up. Getting to it.

• You’d think that at some point someone would have clued Tito Jones in on the fact that he was in a fight and not a sparring match. In fights, you actually have to defeat your opponent, not just rock them and let them recover.
• Aaron Rosa and Anthony Ruiz - not ready for prime time!
• I’d like to see Lavar Johnson against someone like Alistair Overeem or Brett Rogers. He’d probably have to throw two or three punches then.
• Sarah Kaufman and Miesha Tate had a decent little scrap, but one thing was very apparent as the bout went on: neither one were Tara LaRosa.
• It’s good that the Mike Aina/Billy Evangelista bout was stopped in Round 2. If it had gone the distance, there’s no telling how many more fouls Evangelista would have committed.

The New Orleans Saints Jeremy Shockey was taken out via stretcher from Rehab, Las Vegas’s best pool party of the week.

Rehab is arguably the greatest pool party in the world. Every Sunday, thousands of people gather for a good old fashioned blackout. Playboy ranks Rehab as one of the top 10 places in the country to have sex in public.

Apparently, this was more than Shockey could handle. At 2 pm, he was taken out of the party, via stretcher, when it was discovered he was unresponsive.

The New Orleans Saints are claiming Shockey was dehydrated, and should be OK.

Expect reservations for Rehab to go through the rough, when the former New York Badboy, and Miami Hurricane, couldn’t handle the chaos that is Rehab.

Women’s action at Roland Garros began with defending champion Ana Ivanovic winning in straight sets. It was a straight set loss for Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo who has had a poor showing at the French in the past few years. Eighteen-year old wild card winner Lauren Embree from the USA lost in her showing against 11th seed Nadia Petrova however she will be back in the junior’s tournament. Other winners today include Na Li and Gisela Dulko.

The women’s game continuous to be unpredictable however number 1 Dinara Safina is the favorite to win considering her consistently solid play this season. Choosing her opponent should she reach the finals is anyone’s guess. Serena Williams hasn’t won this tournament since 2002 however after her win in Australia this year, she is a real contender. There are plenty of Russians playing this year and as there are four in the top 10 (including Safina) we should see some fantastic play and possibly a winner from one of them. The French still have hope in Marion Bartoli and Alize Cornet.

A tip from the Joker to get your betting day under way….

Tonight’s opponents, St Gallen, were set up by a band of ex-pats with an unholy love of Kevin, the former QPR striker who numbers Morrissey amongst his mates, and for whom Alex Ferguson allegedly once bid £5m (at a time when £5m could easily have got him Chris Sutton).

That last paragraph’s not entirely true. Still, they were Ivan ‘Bam-Bam’ Zamorano’s first European club, and that’s something to respect them for. As is their position atop the Swiss Challenge League: they are eight points clear of Lugano, who are another 19 points ahead of the team in third. The match doesn’t matter much to either team, but it’s St Gallen who have kept their form better, taking 13 points from their last five games. For that reason, they are the selection at [2.38].

Recommendation: Back St Gallen @ [2.38] to beat Lugano

Form and results point to Matt Dartnall’s speedster, says The Lord.

You have to fear (!) a number of things, more of which later, but there really is only one greyhound that can win the Derby at Wimbledon on Saturday - and that’s Ballymac Ruso ([3.7]).

It’s the only scenario that form students can have after the quarter-finals and semis, because Matt Dartnall’s dog has been faultless from the boxes and set the fastest time in the event in both races. That’s some feat considering it was a third run in eight days for the last 12.

But that’s also not to say that it won’t be a cracking race. Far from it. Farloe Reason ([7.6])is running brilliantly, will be suited by a middle pitch and the way he closed down Ballymac Ruso in the quarters suggests that, in a clean-run race, he will be bang there. But can he get the jump on Ruso? That’s the question.

So to the other possibilities. Trap one for Fear Zafonic ([4.7]) has been yearned for by connections since day one. Even with trap one having such a poor record in the Derby, they want red. And it’s clear to see why.

He can’t win on his last two performances. Lacking nothing in courage, his sparkle has been dimmed by tough draws. And it will need all of Charlie Lister’s powers in the week ahead to galvanise this warrior. He should be twice the price he currently is, but it’s the Lister factor, you know.

How do you factor that in? That’s the puzzle for punters, but it wouldn’t be the greatest surprise to see him go whoosh out of the boxes. But on what we’ve seen, it’s Ruso first, Reason second, Wise Thought ([3.65]) third. With the last-named ready to swoop if they pile up on the inside.

Speaking of short outfield porches (see three posts down), here is a question I’ve asked before and never had adequately answered:

Why are baseball outfields deepest in centerfield and shallowest in left and right? Why not a uniform distance all the way around?

In fact, why not have centerfield be the shortest distance from home and the areas just inside the foul poles be the farthest?

This way you reward people for hitting the ball straight, and decrease the benefit for hitting a ball barely fair (home run) versus barely foul (strike).

How about a wall that simply follows a straight line connecting foul pole to foul pole?

Why not? You’ve got until Tuesday morning to explain all this to me. I’m out until then.
